A Message from the Festival Director

Matthew RedFest 1As testament to the hard work and savvy innovation of Redhill School staff, the festival is a rich treasure trove, geared for a weekend’s entertainment second to none. The diverse programme for this year has been curated by Matthew Counihan, Director of Visual and Performing Arts at Redhill and acclaimed stage performer and main panel judge for the Naledi Theatre Awards. Matthew will bring together the crème de la crème of South Africa’s arts community for a weekend of performance, creativity, and knowledge-sharing that puts the youth truly centre-stage.

RedFest is a snapshot of an overarching ethos, the Redhill Innovate project, that seeks to edify and round-out students prior to their interfacing with the world. RedFest has formed a strategic alliance with ASSITEJ South Africa – Theatre for Youth. This non-profit organisation aims to promote and foster high quality theatre for children and young people, to raise standards within the industry, to increase access and awareness, to be an advocate for the right of every child to arts education in schools, and to build relationships within the sector locally, nationally, and globally. Through this partnership RedFest will provide a platform for The Naledi/ASSITEJ SA Award Showcase. Shows under this banner are considered for Naledi Nomination.

From humble (and successful) beginnings, the festival has managed to secure some of South Africa’s hottest and most exciting talent. Joining the theatrical line-up will be some strong student theatre, created for students by students.

RedFest has garnered the support of a group of affiliates who are national leaders in their fields to encourage collaboration and contribution to the discussion around innovative practices in education that harness the power of creativity, to ensure our children are groomed into savvy global citizens.
